After getting infected with the "Tinkering Virus" during my stay at the Exploratorium in San Francisco last year I alwys wanted to give a tinkering worskhop by myself. The Kulturfestival Wedding Moabit was the chance to offer the first workshop and introduce my new gallery and Makerspace "haptick" at the same time. It was a great sucess and I am glad I did it! The first Maker Faire in Germany took place in Hannover on August 3rd this year. Of course I had to go and see how much it was alike the original one in the States. I did not expect 100.000 people like in California, but I have to admit it was a good start with far more visitors than expected. There is room for improvement though but I m sure the organizers will do so at the next years's faire. Find more impressions and a little review here >Work > Photography > Maker Faire

haptick is a 100 sqm place dedicated to interactive art and interactive exhibits in brand environments, exhibitions and science centers. Split into a gallery, tinkering and office space it offers a brand new renovated inspiring and creative work environment for people preferably from the same field.
The main space is open and bright and facing the uprising Torfstraße in the "Sprengelkiez" in Wedding. There are some nice cafes and restaurants around and a nice river promenade is as close as the U9 station Amrumer Straße. The large window space and wide sidewalk offer a certain presence and can be used as well.
The back room offers a nice tinkering space for two people, a fully equipped kitchen and a nice desk for common meals and hang outs. An additional big cellar gives some storage space and room for messing with paints or other creative stuff.
The office part is limited to three desks in total and attached to the gallery space, which will come to live soon. So, if you are interested in and working with interactive, haptical and art stuff - this is your place.
And if you are a cool geek, familiar with arduino and other techniques or happen to be a talented and experienced graphics designer, there might be a chance for some fruitful collaborations too.
Finally and not to forget: a high speed W-Lan, a professional alarm system, an Italian coffee machine, b/w printer and some quite nice tools are available too.
Welcome at haptick !

Finally! Many months after visiting the famous Maker Faire in the Bay Area I took the time to go through thousands of pictures and choose some of them to show you here. For me these pictures mainly have a documentary function, but I think they are worth seeing anyway - at least for people who are interested in making, tinkering and any crazy stuff that can be done with all kinds of materials and techniques. At least for me the visit of the Maker faire in San Mateo last year was the highlight of my six weeks stay in San Francisco and at the Exploratorium. Luckily I was at the right place at the right time. Hope you have a som fun too when flipping through. You can find the whole set of pictures here Work > Photography > Maker Faire

After not having been in the United States for many years, I visisted them even two times in 2012. After my stay with the Exploratorium in San Francisco in spring, I came back to Ohio after 15 years to attend the ASTC (Association of Science and Technology Centers) conference. Of course I couldn't stop in New York without visiting the New York Hall of Science and taking a little stroll through downtown Manhattan. The most touching place was the 9/11 memorial with it's huge construction site for the new towers going on. I picked some of the impressions to share it here. This reminds me so much of my favorite interactive exhibit from the Science Center Technorama in Switzerland, the "Super Rope". Artist Daniel Palacios used this principle to create a beautiful interactive piece of art. It is made of two turbines, supported by a tuning fork structure that hold a long rope. Depending on how the visitor behaves in front of it it changes its freqency and the spinning rope appears in wonderful changing patterns. I would love to see this version in real!

Today I visited the so called biggest electronic entertainment event in the world at former airport Tempelhof in Berlin. The Campus Party Europe basically gathers 10.000 gamers, hacker, geeks and other people “addicted” to technology on a high level. I have to admit that my geek factor is not that high, even though I know one special person who thinks it is. But having the chance to see the inventor of the internet Tim Berners-Lee speaking live made me really curious to go. So far so good - yes I SAW him, but the audio quality was just not acceptable for such a big event. Hey, there are really good audio engineers and equipment out there! Maybe someone should put this on the agenda for the next Camus Party? So at least I had a nice conversation with a smart young guy and took some pictures. Borderlands is a new interface for composing and performing with granular synthesis, a technique that involves the superposition of small time fragments, or grains, of sound to create completely new textures and timbres. This software enables flexible, real- time improvisation. It is designed to allow users to engage with sonic material on a fundamental level, breaking free of traditional interaction paradigms such as knobs and sliders. The user is envisioned as an organizer of sound, simultaneously assuming the roles of curator, performer, and listener. The following video documents a recent live performance with this software. It's members night at the Exploratorium and they celebrate Frank Oppenheimer's 100th birthday without me. Too bad... but at least I want to send a big happy birthday from Berlin! I will be back soon ;-) Find the flickr set from his birthday party at the Exploratorium at Flickr here.

After having attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors at its last location in Stuttgart in 2008, the current Ideenpark takes place at Essen from 11th to 23rd of August 2012. Uncountable attractions that introduce topics related to engineering, technology or research are presented to the visitor of all ages. Due to the free admission visitors can take their time and come back every day to discover something new. Of course this is no official "Maker Faire" but after haveing seen the original in the Bay Area this summer, it felt a bit familiar – but also less crazy and creative for sure. On my way back from the Ideenpark in Essen I used the chance to visit the documenta for my first time. of course this is impossible to do in one and a half days, but absolutlely worth trying. First thing to do is renting a Konrad bike to get around the city and especially the Karlsaue (public garden). Second is to buy the cataologue to not getting lost in the art. Third is to stay curiuos about what's hiding around the next corner. Many things to discover in Kassel! Find the whole set of pictures on Work > Photograph > documenta13

Today I vsisited the DMY Design Festival in Berlin that is taking place at the former airport Tempelhof. I always loved this locations, even when it was still a functional airport. Now it is used as a event location more and more and really worth seeing. The festival itself was kind of... okay... for me. Maybe i was just not in the right moood, maybe it is too small for being setup in the huge hangar. I still miss the old Designmai a bit. This was smaller and a more intimate atmosphere. Anyhow I want to share some pictures that I took. You can find the whole set at Work > Photography > DMY Design Festival

Besides the important things, that should be kept in mind, when building exhibits, the visitor himheslf is a not to be underestimated factor during the design and development process. Whe I was working as a Creative Director at volke presentation in Wolfbsurg, I already had a lot of expereince in designing interactive exhibits, but very soon one of my most vaulable collegues become the one, that was doing the service during a trade fair show – in that case mostly international high level Autoshows. Often read, repeated to designers like using prayer wheels and still as often ignored and being punished for it by the visitors: the “Golden Rules” are my favorite advice and I quote them often – very often. To all my collegues that I am training in design and development of interactive exhibits, to clients, to myself. We can’t internalize it deep enough: visitors are humans like you and me. Watch yourself carefully and you can avoid a lot of mistakes and upfollowing disappointments, when designing interactive exhibits. Working with experienced exhibit builders helps a lot to avoid double work from the beginning. Of course nobody is born with that knowldege, but it really helps a lot to take the following rules for serious. Learn about the Golden Rules Part 1…
